If you live in the greater Orlando area and are suffering from theme park overload, you might consider taking the kids to the Orlando Science Center as an alternative family outing.
We recently had an opportunity to tour the center after a travel writers’ meetup in Orlando. With four stories of exhibits, there’s certainly plenty to see, but my two favorite areas were the rooms with hands-on scientific concept demonstrations (sound waves, electricity), and the giant dinosaur skeletons, one of which was animated. Very cool. There was also a temporary exhibit of antique music boxes which was quite impressive.
Something to fly all the way down from Boston for? Probably not. But a great community resource for families living in the area, and worth squeezing in when you’ve had your fill of the mouse. (Tip: If you happen to be driving across the state and want to check out another family-friendly education venue, consider the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, FL. It’s hands-on, great for photo ops and way more educational than a theme park. )
Disclosure: A special thanks to The Orlando Science Center for providing the meeting space for our travel bloggers’ get together.
