Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village

Sabbaday-Lake

The Shakers are a people whose number may not yet be many, but whose cultural impact is still strong.  In New Gloucester, Maine, is the only remaining active and functioning Shaker community IN THE WORLD.  Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village is an anachronism in the 21st century and a tribute to a more simple, traditional life.

The drive to Sabbathday is scenic, as the community is nestled in the Oxford Hills.  The museum is open to the public from Memorial Day through Columbus Day, and there are workshops held throughout the summer and well into the fall.  Workshops that include woodworking, chair caning and spinning.  A little respite from the hectic life of the average person can definitely be found in a visit to the brothers and sisters of Sabbathday Lake.
