Photo from the Road: Monastery Bell in Thailand

MonasteryBellRSZD

As bustling as Bangkok is, there are still places you can go to get zen. Such is this little spot at a monastery we visited there.

At the majority of the Buddhist monasteries I’ve been to in East Asia, the coordinators are almost always open to respectful visiting travelers.  In addition to a wonderful cultural experience, these make for a relaxing break in the middle of an otherwise hurried and possibly frustrating travel day.

I still love looking at this bell image for its serenity, drama and commanding presence. What’s your favorite way to get zen when traveling to a busy, intense country?

This bell is absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for this.

As someone who lives in Bangkok, I believe that this city is one of the lest Zen places in the world. I agree with Jessie V about finding ones own quite corner in a park… or the Bangkok BTS (sky train) which is very quiet and serene and provides a great, cheap view of the city. Wat Pho which is in the centre of the city is actually a very Zen place once you get past the building where the Reclining Buddha is housed. Regardless of where I am in Bangkok, if I want a calm moment I simply close my eyes and exhale.
