Travel Tip: The Flexibility of the Flexible Cutting Board

I recently read an article on how to always be prepared for a picnic on the road. I nearly ignored the piece, but then thought better of it.
Those of of you who read this particular post on the subject may recall it included the use of one of those popular new ultra thin and flexible cutting boards for the kitchen. At first, I thought I might like to skip this item in favor of a leftover (free) plastic lid from a large coffee can. The more I thought about it, the more I think I’ll make the switch, at least for longer term travel. Here’s why: The coffee can lid (while free, flexible, lightweight and small) only has the one use, to serve as a cutting surface and possible plate. While this is fine if you just want to be prepared for day trips, the flexible cutting boards can also serve as “folding boards”. Those expensive little numbers some travel stores are charging major bucks for that enable you to fold your shirts crisply before packing. One challenge while being on the road for months at a time, particularly when you are on a shoestring budget is always feeling like a wrinkled frump. With this combo idea, I think I can really begin to tackle this issue without having to compromise pack space. Any thoughts, everybody?
