In the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok lies a truly unique, comfortably priced Thai restaurant with tons of atmosphere.
The place? Cabbages and Condoms.

David’s been telling me about this place since before we were married. Recently, we finally had a chance to go there together. Lots of color, plants and white lights with two stories of open air seating and additional seating inside make this a sure bet while you’re in Bangkok. And the food? Phenomenal!

With an eye towards presentation as well as flavor, the menu includes all the traditional favorites for Thai cuisine enthusiasts as well as some you may not be familiar with, such as a shrimp and tomato concoction served inside a whole coconut. David had homok which came in a hand crafted bowl of banana leaves. I had a spicy shrimp and cashew red curry with steamed rice. We polished it off by sharing an order of Thai banana fritters with honey and ice cream.

The founder of this place has opened at least one other location that we know of. This is good news because the entire business is based on the concept of charity and social responsibility.
The condom part of the the theme (apparent in the gift shop and various sculptural elements around the place) was the owner’s way of promoting social responsibility. The charity component? A fair amount of the proceeds go to underprivileged Thai women.
When I first heard of this place, I thought it would be a fun place to check out, but might be a little to edgy for me to become a regular. I was pleasantly surprised at how elegant it is. This place is worth checking out and you can feel confident your dollars will go to a good cause. If we lived here, we’re pretty sure we’d be calling this place our second home . . . it’s that great!
