Entry to Pachacamac

A fairly large site thirty minutes outside of Lima, this set of ruins is only about fifty percent excavated.

In addition to the Inca, three other ancient civilizations are represented here. According to our guide, UNESCO has expressed an interest in helping with funds, but apparently there is a dispute between the two districts that border the site, Pachacamac and Lurin. Until the dispute is settled over which district officially includes the ruins, the funds can’t be released. (Again, this is according to our guide.)

This is a bit sad, because there is so much just waiting to be unearthed . . . in many places you can see pottery shards and fragments partially exposed.  Thankfully, there are some international archaeology students participating in the efforts. Here are some pictures of our day-long jaunt there.

This is the women’s house, where young girls were selected to live their whole lives awaiting sacrifice.
