Hello, everyone.  Just got done chatting with one of my techie colleagues, Mike Davidson, regarding accessing our PC remotely while on the road.

(Mike consults privately. You can contact him by going to http://www.picturesquedesigns.com )

I was mentioning that we had been looking at gotomypc.com as a remote access option for our computer and software, as opposed to the pc-anywhere option.  Michael is strongly recommending pc-anywhere for a few reasons.

  • It’s a one-time fee for the software as opposed to a monthly subscription fee.
  • Even though I was concerned about the pc-anywhere requirement to have their software on both your home pc and on the remote access computer. I did not think this would be allowed in most of the international internet cafes, and gotomypc.com just has you log in at their site and access your computer that way. Michael told me that on the newest edition of pc-anywhere there’s an additional java version that you can store on a thumb drive and plug that into the u.s.b. port of the cafe computer. Not a large piece of equipment to lug in the backpack, and a fairly significant savings over the monthly fee with the other service. He’s specifically recommending version 11.5 of the software.

Not sure where we’ll come down on this, but we’ll continue to chronicle the decision-making process and keep you all posted.
