Saving on travel accommodations might be easier than you think. Numerous money saving options are available.

Other than hosteling, catching an overnight train between destinations, or snagging an expat job with housing included, you may want to consider the international house swapping or house sitting networks. David and I have only recently started exploring this, and are hoping to actively participate in house swapping with the lake cottage we bought this past summer.

However, our upcoming trip around the marble is taking place during the winter. The lake cottage is currently suited for summer use only. That leaves us with housesitting, which we are planning on incorporating at least somewhat on the trip. Here are some resources we’ve found so far:

  • The Caretaker Gazette A publication of house caring opportunities.
  • Housecarers A service where you can register to be a housesitter and people who have opportunities available will contact you. You can also view some of the available homes on the site.
  • Senior Sitters We’re not there yet, but this is a service where you can register to house sit, and they want only applicants over the age of fifty.

  • Mind My House Another housesitter-homeowner matchup service.
  • House Sit World House sitting web site.
  • Budget Accomodations This is an article from budgettravelonline.com featuring information on housesitting, as well as other tips for shaving costs on travel accommodations.
